Abbey Genealogy Enthusiasts was launched on the 17th November 2004. Initially the idea began when Garth Gregory found that mobility and finance were becoming a problem and hindrance to researching records. Although more information is available on the Internet, a lot of this is in the form of indexes and a certain amount of travel is still involved. Likewise, the cost of obtaining the actual records can also mount up rapidly.
Realising that there would be other people in the same boat he decided a local group, sharing resources and costs, could do a lot more research than on their own. With the help of Lezley Viller, Garth set out to form a local group with the purpose; "To enable those with difficulties, whether physical or financial, to research their ancestry".
Now Abbey Genealogy Enthusiasts meet on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Waltham Abbey Library. They are building up a records section of Census, Parish Records, Directories and BMD material. The census returns for the area are already available on site, however, the collection is being expanded to cover the county and other counties that the members are researching.
